Event Information

Giving the President's Prestigious Lecture, Professor Owen Bowden Jones will be speaking about his new evidence-based guidance to support the effective treatment of people with co-occurring substance use disorder and mental illness.

The guidance will include a case study focusing on cannabis use and the links to mental illness, and Professor Bowden Jones will be speaking and taking questions on this area of the report.

A panel discussion will follow Professor Bowden Jones' presentation.

Professor Owen Bowden-Jones

Professor Owen Bowden-Jones is a Consultant in Addiction Psychiatry at the CNWL Club Drug Clinic, London and an Honorary Professor at University College London.

 In 2010, Owen founded the CNWL Club Drug Clinic, an innovative service offering treatment for emerging drug problems including novel psychoactive substances, club drugs and online purchased prescription medications. The service has recently expanded to support student health services at Imperial College London and University College London.

Education is a particular interest and Owen led the development and publication of the national NEPTUNE clinical guidance and associated e-learning, co-authored the Clinical Handbook of Club Drug and Novel Psychoactive Substances and oversaw the release of the ATOMIC mobile phone app, an educational tool covering prescription medication misuse.

National roles include Chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), trustee of the Society for the Study of Addiction (SSA), board member at the International Society for the Study of Emerging Drugs (ISSED) and a special adviser to the Universities UK drugs taskforce. His research interests include emerging drugs harms, particularly in young people.

Owen contributes widely to the public debate on substance use and authored ‘The Drug Conversation’, a book for parents about adolescent drug use, which was ‘Highly Commended’ at the BMA Book Awards. He regularly speaks in a wide variety of settings including schools, academic conferences and policy fora.

Dr Emily Finch

Dr Finch is the Chair of the RCPsych Addictions Faculty, Chair of the Addictions Clinical Academic Group (CAG) Clinical Director with responsibility for Addiction services across Lambeth, Bexley, Greenwich and Wandsworth. She is currently clinical lead for the Alcohol Assertive Outreach Team.

She is currently on the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) And co-chair of the recovery committee. She was a member of the group revising the 2007 Drug misuse and dependence: guidelines on clinical management and is also a member of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. Emily is the vice-chair of the 网曝黑料 Addictions Executive. She is a co-chair of the London Joint Working Group on Hepatitis C. She is a member of the NICE guidelines group on safer prescribing.

Emily teaches and lectures, on all aspects of addiction and supervises PhD students. She is an educational and clinical supervisor for psychiatric trainees. She is head of education and training for the Clinical Academic Group. Her research interests include the outcome of treatment for opiate users, hepatitis C and injectable prescribing. Emily is a Trustee of alcohol research UK and Gamcare.

Miss Melinda King

Melinda is an expert by experience in alcohol addiction and recovery. Melinda is a patient representative on the Addictions Faculty Committee at the 网曝黑料. Melinda is involved in several projects as a public contributor and also works in public and patient involvement for several studies, including for the ProACTIVE study into hospital-based alcohol care teams.

Dr Jonathan Dewhurst 

Dr Dewhurst is clinical lead for Addiction and Homeless services at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. He now runs recovery services and supports consultants across the North West of England. His interests include injectable prescribing, new psychoactive substances and safe management of addiction patients in the acute hospital and prison settings. He has contributed to the NEPTUNE clinical guidelines. Dr Dewhurst is an expert lecturer and contributor for the British Association for Psychopharmacology.
