Choose people who know your work well, but they can't be people under your supervision.

All Fellowship applications need the support of a College Faculty, Devolved Nation or Division Chair.

If you know a Chair well, you can ask them to be your proposer or seconder. If not, don't worry! Simply select which Chair is the most appropriate to review your application when completing your form and once it's complete we'll send your application to that Chair to ask for their approval. This won't impact your application in any way.

After this stage it will be reviewed again by the Membership Services team to make sure it's all in order. If one of your supporters is a College Chair your application will now be complete. If not, your application will be shared with your chosen Chair for their support.

You'll receive updates at various stages to let you know what's happening with your application.

All applications are sent to the College's Nominations Committee in the autumn. They'll review each application and decide who should be elected to Fellowship.

All applicants will be told the outcome of their application in November each year.

If you're successful, congratulations! You'll then be able to register as a Fellow, this involves paying the Fellowship registration fee, and usually involves a top-up subscription fee for the end of the year.

Once you've paid the registration fee, you can use the FRCPsych postnominals and will officially be a Fellow of the College.

As part of your application you'll be asked to nominate a proposer and seconder. They must both be subscribing College members but they don't have to be Fellows themselves.

Your proposer will be asked to write a citation to support your application. The citation allows someone who knows your work to tell us about your achievements and the ways in which you have contributed to psychiatry. You should choose someone who's very familiar with your work to write the citation.

Your seconder won't need to write a citation as well, they just need to lend their support to the citation that's been written by your proposer.

Don't worry if your proposer and seconder aren't well known in the College, this won't affect your application. We're interested in what they have to say about you and your work, rather than who they are.

An application would be rejected if:

  • there is an ongoing GMC investigation or the applicant is under supervision or has a current written warning
  • there is knowledge of behaviour that could bring psychiatry into disrepute
  • the applicant fails to follow guidance and demonstrate necessary achievements in an application, e.g. not enough information contained on the CV form.

Yes, you're welcome to reapply in a subsequent year if your application is unsuccessful.

When you're told of the outcome there'll be an explanation of why your application was unsuccessful, so this will help you know which areas need strengthening when you come to reapply.
