Course overview
Clinical uncertainty is a challenge faced by doctors throughout their careers, but it can be particularly difficult to manage when transitioning into a role with more responsibility. Newly qualified doctors may find it harder to ask for help as they begin to practice independently, leaving them feeling alone and afraid. How can we keep our patients and ourselves safe as we grow into a new role?
During this one-day workshop, you will be introduced to a way of approaching uncertainty that will help you identify the causes, manage your feelings and behaviours and communicate more confidently with your patients and colleagues.
Medical education has traditionally focused on the linear process of identifying signs and symptoms, diagnosing and formulating a management plan. However, the real world is often more complex and medical students transitioning into junior doctors lack experience in dealing with this. This is particularly the case in psychiatry, where the lack of diagnostic tests, stigma, the possibility of physical co-morbidity and legal issues interact to create multiple areas of uncertainty.
Skills in reflective practice, patient-centred evidence-based care and communication of complexity and uncertainty with colleagues and patients can enable doctors and students to develop their response to uncertainty across disciplines.
This workshop will help you to identify and reflect on instances of uncertainty, and to build a set of helpful management strategies, including communicating with colleagues and senior clinicians, and having the confidence to communicate uncertainty to patients, as part of a shared decision-making process.
