Dr Leah B Henen

North West England Wellbeing Champion

Leah B Henen holds a dual CCT accreditation in Medical Psychotherapy and General Adult Psychiatry (Liaison Endorsement). She currently has the position of a Living Well Consultant Psychiatrist for Pennine Care Foundation Trust. She is also the Wellbeing Lead for Pennine, undertaking the journey of supporting the Trust to look after the wellbeing of their Doctors and Trainers. Previously, she had experience in the private sector as the Lead Consultant for a company called Care In Mind.

Leah has a passion for wellness and psychotherapy, which she has used in all aspects of her career. She was both a flexible and a less than full time (LTFT) trainee for much of her training and continues to advocate for this as a Consultant.

With her primary modality being psychoanalysis, she further expanded her psychotherapy expertise by training as a Somatic Experience Practitioner (Peter Levine). This training deeply interlinked with her knowledge within psychoanalysis, has been the stepping stones in providing key treatment protocols to patients who are struggling with symptom ranges from burnout to complex post-traumatic stress disorder. As part of her NHS position, she is running a training clinic to support colleagues to use these skills in both treating themselves but also their patients. She is also part of setting up a CPD group for body-orientated psychotherapists within the NHS.

For Leah as a Champion and Lead, her wellbeing aim is to support the systems we work in to encompass wellbeing. Wellbeing lies within a structured but flexible timetable, where people can support themselves when they truly need it. People are not machines; they need time to recuperate, and be supported to acknowledge what they need and when they need it, at times when they are at their most vulnerable. Systems have to grow empathic and caring protocols to allow people to feel safe enough to look after themselves and therefore others. This is something that needs to be pioneered and grown within the lives of professionals.

In her own time, Leah has used her SE training-experience to offer trauma informed workshops and retreats, where she hosts mediation, movement and Yoga Nidra sessions. In combination with holistic colleagues, she set up 'The Rested Collective', a group of people who offer sessions that give the opportunities for people to find deep rest and to heal.
