Dr Hari Kumar
East Scotland Wellbeing Champion
Dr Hari Kumar is a core trainee in the East of Scotland, currently working with NHS Tayside. He graduated in India and has been serving as an International Medical Graduate (IMG) in NHS Scotland for the past three years. From the outset of his NHS journey, he has been a strong advocate for the wellbeing of doctors, believing that supporting healthcare professionals is essential to sustaining and revitalizing the NHS.
He has led and contributed to several initiatives aimed at improving the experience of IMGs in the NHS. One of his key contributions includes developing a competency checklist as part of a shadowing program, which proved highly successful in NHS Ayrshire and Arran (West of Scotland). This model has since been adopted by other trusts and is currently on track to becoming a national framework.
His work also includes completing an international workforce project focused on supporting overseas doctors as they transition into the NHS. This involved creating a comprehensive guidebook to help them navigate both professional life in the UK and everyday living in Scotland.
Passionate and forward-thinking, he has a strong interest in NHS structural reform. His priorities include promoting sustainability, encouraging patient-centred care, reducing administrative burdens, and improving access to training support – particularly in areas such as portfolio development and wellbeing resources for doctors in training.
