Dr Saadia Muzaffar

Co-Associate Registrar for Wellbeing

I am a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist with a strong belief in compassionate, holistic, and person-centred care and received my core and higher psychiatric training in Exeter. My clinical approach integrates both mind and body, and I have practised a number of psychotherapeutic modalities including Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), group analysis, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and Balint group facilitation for psychiatric trainees. I formally trained as a Cognitive Analytic Therapist and often use a formulation-based approach to support individuals in a psychologically informed and meaningful way, both in individual care and within teams.

My passion for the wellbeing of doctors, particularly that of psychiatrists, has developed over years of supervising trainees, supporting medical colleagues, and treating doctors experiencing burnout and mental health difficulties. These experiences led me to pursue research focused on the wellbeing of doctors, with particular attention to the systemic challenges they face and the impact of these factors on their mental health.

Speaking of my other interests, as the International Medical Graduate (IMG) Champion for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Trust, I developed and regularly deliver communication skills workshops and have established peer-support forums aimed at supporting the wellbeing and integration of IMG doctors. I also set up and currently chair the Medical Advisory Committee in my trust, ensuring the voices of senior medical staff are heard and that their wellbeing remains a key priority. I’m actively involved in staff wellbeing initiatives in my Trust as well as the college and understand the emotional and professional pressures doctors carry throughout the span of their careers.

Alongside my clinical and leadership responsibilities, I co-authored a book chapter on Psychotherapies for Psychosis in Low- and Middle-Income Countries and have delivered teaching sessions for GPs and psychiatrists on borderline personality disorder, learning disabilities and moral injury. I have also initiated psychoeducation groups for carers, for people with bipolar affective disorder, and for inpatient staff at risk of burnout.

My current interests include the mental health and wellbeing of doctors – particularly female doctors – women’s mental health, transcultural psychiatry, and the long-term impact of early attachment on adult mental health.

In my role as Co-Chair and Associate Registrar for Wellbeing at the 网曝黑料, my focus has been on reinvigorating the Wellbeing Committee, contributing to the College's wellbeing position statement, and supporting work on the Workforce and Retention Charter. I am especially committed to highlighting the needs of underserved groups within psychiatry through this work and feel privileged to work alongside an inspiring and visionary committee, and I hope our work continues to foster thriving, satisfaction, and psychological safety in psychiatric practice – so that psychiatrists can continue to provide the best possible care to their patients.
