Election address
My aim
My main goal as Treasurer would be to ensure that our College really focuses on its core objectives, and delivers excellent value for all our members.
These objectives are
- Setting standards in psychiatry
- Training the best psychiatrists
- Promoting excellence in mental health services
- Promoting quality and research
- Being the voice of psychiatry
How I will achieve it
The money the College has to achieve this comes mostly from its members, e.g. subscriptions, exam fees and course and conference fees. So I would make sure that we only raise the revenue we absolutely need from members, and making sure it is spent in the most effective way to achieve the goals that members want. Proper engagement and consultation with members is crucial to achieve this.
I would also ensure that existing and new revenue generating contracts the College has, e.g. for publications, the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (NCCMH) and the College Centre for Quality Improvement (CCQI), are fair and generate appropriate income for their activities.
The College cannot do anything if it is not financially solvent. So I would make sure risk is appropriately managed and there are contingency plans to manage unexpected events. Important here is the management of financial and other assets, and, mindful of the experiences of other Colleges, planning to minimise reputational risk.
We are proudly a diverse College, and the perspective of all College members is important, wherever they trained. Resident Doctors, Devolved Councils, English and International Divisions, Faculties and Special Interest groups all make immense contributions to the College’s work, and I will make sure they have right financial support to continue to do so.
What experience I can bring
I am highly committed to the work of the College, and have demonstrated this in different College roles since 2004
- As Chief Examiner, ensuring delivery through the pandemic and beyond, and returning the CASC to a face to face exam
- As Elected Fellow on the College Council, representing all members in College decision making
- Representing Council on the College’s Finance Management Committee, both currently, and also at the time we bought the current headquarters building
- As Associate Dean for Conferences and Advanced Learning, developing the International Congress and leading the College’s CPD programs
- As Chair of the Faculty of Intellectual Disability (and previously Finance Officer) leading the College response to care scandals
- As Chair of the Westminster Parliamentary Liaison Committee, liaising on behalf of the College with politicians and other mental health charities to influence what became the 2007 Mental Health Act
Why vote for me?
I would strive to refocus the College on its core purpose, and ensure we deliver excellent value for members’ hard earned contributions. I would also make sure finances are prudently managed and risks to the College are appropriately mitigated. I have loved working with a great diversity of College members in leading different aspects of the College’s work and would bring this enthusiasm, commitment and experience to the role of Treasurer.
