His Majesty The King has announced his Birthday Honours List 2025 which recognises the exceptional contributions people have made to mental health across the UK.
We are thrilled that one of our former Presidents, our incoming Registrar and a Fellow of the College have all been recognised for their outstanding service.
RCPsych Fellow and former President, Professor Sir Simon Wessely, has been appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire. Sir Simon is Professor of Psychological Medicine at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, Director of the King’s Centre for Military Health Research and a former President of the Royal Society of Medicine. He has carried out extensive work in the fields of military health, epidemiology and also led the Independent Review of the Mental Health Act.
RCPsych Fellow and incoming Registrar, Professor Owen Bowden-Jones, has received a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Professor Bowden-Jones is a clinician, researcher, government adviser and public communicator with a particular interest in the treatment of substance use disorders. He is currently Chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs and President of the Society for the Study of Addiction.
RCPsych Fellow, Professor Muhammad Afzal Javed, has been awarded an Officers of the Order of the British Empire. Professor Javed is Chairman of the Pakistan Psychiatric Research Center and a former President of the World Psychiatric Association. He is particularly interested in Social and Transcultural Psychiatry, Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Psychiatric Research.

Sir Simon is a pre-eminent researcher and epidemiologist who has steadfastly fought the cause of those with mental illness, singularly helping raise the profile of psychiatry among the public and wider stakeholders throughout his exceptional career.
“Owen has persistently worked to improve and save the lives of people with mental illness, from his day-to-day clinical work to advising on national drug use policy. His unique talents are highly regarded by his peers which is reflected in his election as our new Registrar.
“Afzal’s outstanding contributions to psychiatry are widely recognised not only here in the UK but also in Pakistan and across the globe. He has been a tireless advocate for people with mental illness and those who care for them.
“I would like to personally thank them all for their dedication and service. They are outstanding figures in the field of psychiatry and inspirations to those who will follow in their footsteps.”
Professor Sir Simon Wessely said:
“The fact that this is the first time a psychiatrist has received this Honour speaks volumes for how far we have travelled in the last few decades. I will enjoy being the first for a while, but I am certain I will not be the last. It’s also great to be sharing the spotlight, however briefly, with my old friend and fabulous colleague, our new Registrar.”
Professor Owen Bowden-Jones said:
“I am delighted to receive this honour and indebted to my many extraordinary colleagues with whom I have worked to improve the care of people experiencing mental illness.”

Professor Jagtar Singh OBE, Lately Chair of the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, has been awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) or services to the NHS.
Dr Matthew John Gaskell, Consultant Psychologist and Clinical Lead at the NHS Northern Gambling Service, who has received a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to People Experiencing Gambling Harm.
